Congratulations to all the candidates! US Youth Goe ChampionshipOur US Youth Goe Championship Qualfying Tournament held on April 4th placed the Tran brothers first and second. Minh Tran, placed first, will have an opportunity to participate in the national finals later this summer. Since we only had players in the Senior division, the AGF will award our allocated Summer Go Camp scholarships to both brothers, Minh and Van.Two other registered players dropped out before the tournament began, one was withdrawn since he didn't meet the citizenship requirements and the other sadly, missed their plane. Please see Tournaments for details and winners. Houston Spring Go Tournament 2009Our latest quarterly tournament was held on on Saturday and Sunday, April 4th and 5th at St. Catherine's Montessori School. 29 players met in our seven round handicap tournament. Our prize purse of over $500 was awarded to winners in three sections: Dan, Single Digit Kyu and Double Digit Kyu Divisions. Please see Tournaments for full details and a list of winners. Lunch was catered by Quizno's and Schlotzky's.Our congratulations go to all the winners especially Chris Hudnall (3d) for taking first place in the Dan division. About $250 in cash prizes was distributed to the top three players in the three divisions. All three Dan winners received a copy of Invincible: The Games of Shusaku, all three Single-digit Kyu winners a copy of Get Strong at the Invading and all three Double-digit Kyu winners a copy of 501 Opening Problems. Every winner received a personalized prize certificate for their accomplishments. Unseen before, between the top two in the Dan division (Chris and Qian), was a completely equal result. After 7 games, both had the same number of wins and the same score for ALL the six tie breakers as reported in the PyTD pairings program. So in order to decide on a winner, we chose Chris who had won his game against Qian Xiang (3d). The TD's decision is final! Thanks go too to everyone who completed our satisfaction survey (.pdf). Compared to our previous tournaments' survey, we did about the same and our publicity could still be improved. On the whole we seem to get good marks and people's preferences were about the same. There is a tendency for participants at 2 day tournaments to want 2 day tournaments and participants at 1 day tournaments to want 1 day tournaments. However we do get better overall tournout at our 2 day Spring tournaments than our other 1 day quarterly tournaments but that might be because its Spring. Our fund will supplement American Go Foundation scholarships awarded to Houston area students. Please support us in this endeavor so we can send some Houston kids to these great programs. We plan to raise funds from tournament proceeds and the generosity of any Houston area players who can help us. As of April. 12, the fund now stands at $205.Last updated May 7, 2009 (rev 1.43) |
